The present 10^th Standard or so called SSLC in which you are all engaged in had a different objective. They would add to this Certificate two categories, one was named as EPS (Eligible for Public Service) and the other one as EC & PS (Eligible for College and Public Service). Passing this grade had a great significance in the life of the students. In 1948, I passed SSLC with EC & PS distinction. This was in fifties of last Century and we would all join what was known as Intermediate, another study of two years to get qualified to go to the Degrees level. You would be surprised to know that the percentage of passes at SSLC would not be more than Eight to Ten percent! In those days, passes even in the Degrees like B.A. or B.Sc etc., would not be more than three to five percent.

Another twenty or thirty years earlier (approximately 1920s) the same intermediate was designated as FA (Faculty of Arts), an examination very few students could get through. In those days, the examination for FA was held in Madras (present Chennai), the second important city for the British after Calcutta (present Kolkata). As a student in those classes, I used to get information about these hard examinations from one of my uncles, who tried for his FA seven times without succeeding!

Compared to those days, you are all very fortunate in percentage passes over 90%. As a person belonging to, close to that generation, I felt I should share this information, which even your elders would not have even known. Since you are all now going out of portals of this institution (although I wish most of you stay back for our PUC Course in our Institution), It is nice to know how hard these exams were once upon a time.

My Dear young students,

All of you are in different stages in your pursuit of higher knowledge and many of you might have studied from Pre-School up to the present stage in this institution and some of you may be completing your high school. You are all aware what this institution stood for and how you have been educated and tutored towards good behaviour and qualities.

As a first child of Hymamshu School, 1942-45 batch, I wish to share with you a few suggestions and advices for your future life and career.

• You should have ambition, goal and dream in life to achieve something. Have faith in your capabilities to handle things.
• Once you achieve the goals of your dream, use it effectively to serve the society. To be a good human, besides your achievements, is also a greater achievement and will be respected by everyone.
• Always move with or associate with good partners, good friends and good souls, who are honest, trustworthy and responsible. Your life will become more happier.
• In this fast changing world, along with ever decreasing natural resources due to many causes, the challenges will be plenty. To meet such challenges, you should be innovative and skilful. Future is only for such people.

You are Hymamshuites and carry the torch with you always to remain world citizens.
